Sheffield Bridge, Sheffield, MA 1997
This $474,872, 92 foot Town Lattice covered bridge was constructed from scratch to replace an existing bridge destroyed by arson.
The trusses were assembled on a flat bench with white oak wood peg (trunnels) connections. The erection of the bridge components, over the Housatonic River, was accomplished with 165-ton hydraulic crane in a two day effort.
The construction period was from July through December of 1998. Over 1300 2- 1/8” wood trundles were driven in place with 15-pound sledge hammers, and more than 44,500 board feet of timber material was consumed.
