Slate Bridge, Swanzey, NH 2000
This bridge is a complete replacement for a bridge destroyed by arson in 1993. Construction of the new trusses began in February, with completion of the $830,000 project in October. The 146 foot trusses are constructed primarily of southern yellow pine. All connections are assembled with 1 ¾” white oak trunnels of which there are over 2000 incorporated. The trunnels were all turned in advance at our shop in Mt Holly, VT. The truss assemblies were completed in 16 weeks and a specially engineered lifting system was incorporated so that the trusses could be tilted to a vertical position using two cranes. Once the trusses were in place, a rigging system was rearranged in order that the trusses could be set across the span with a single 300-ton crane.
The project scope included guardrails, installation of a new suction line in the Ashulot River for fire protection, complete sprinkler system, a state of the art fire detection system, and a fire preventive coating of all the wood members.
