Westshire School, West Fairlee, VT 2000

This all-new, $2,600,000, 22,500 square foot elementary school serves kindergarten through fifth grade. Part of the dual-state Rivendell School District, the building goals included designing education space for energy efficiency while promoting the best possible environment for students.

Innovative architectural features utilize individual porches with columns, cathedral ceilings and skylights. The siding is cementitious fiber with a 50-year life to reduce annual maintenance, and the floors were built as a 5″ slab on grade exposed with a stained finish.

Many energy conscious features were incorporated with the help of an energy consultant, and include items such as a high roof insulation value of R-50, energy efficient classroom lighting with variable fixtures, controlled air tightness features, and a mechanical system designed around an energy recovery unit to heat the building.

Site development included ball fields, a soccer field, play ground equipment area and significant landscaping.
