Charlotte Covered Bridge

This project consisted of extensive structural repairs to the trusses, one of which was nonfunctional when work began, the removal of two existing steel support beams and installation of four new larger steel beams under the bridge floor beams and deck to increase loading capabilities, and complete siding and roofing replacement. Though not originally planned for as part of the design, once construction started it became apparent that the existing concrete abutment seats were quite deteriorated and would need replacement. Since the bridge was shored in place on the abutments when this was determined, the abutment caps had to be replaced in sections. The project also includes new guardrail, riprap installation for erosion protection and regarded approaches with new paving. This bridge also received fire retardant and insecticide/fungicide coatings.
